Guy Smith

I advise on a wide range of commercial, corporate and consumer matters. I’ve spent a number of years in house at some of New Zealand’s largest companies and so have a first-hand understanding of the value of practical, straightforward legal advice.

My expertise includes advising on, negotiating and documenting all types of commercial transactions including: joint ventures, strategic partnership or 'teaming' deals, licensing and IP transfer. I advise on corporate governance and structuring, M&A transactions, procurement and outsourcing and a range of services arrangements. I also specialise in privacy and data protection.

I have extensive experience in the tech sector, including in development, support and integration projects of all sizes, the outsourcing of significant IT projects, data set management and transfer, and simplifying and effectively communicating consumer terms of service and privacy information.

I also have expertise and experience in the powers and obligations of school Boards of Trustees and the operation of incorporated societies, charities and other not-for-profits. I currently sit on the board of St Patrick’s College, Silverstream and in the past I have held various not-for-profit governance roles including sitting on the boards of Capital Football and the Auckland Softball Foundation Charitable Trust.
