Enterprising businesses combining profit with purpose
Duncan Cotterill is passionate about supporting the initiative and innovation of social enterprises. Vital for the social, cultural and environmental health of New Zealand communities, social enterprise also helps create more inclusive and sustainable local economies.
Embracing positive change
We love working with enterprising people who have a vision for social change! To foster the growth and impact of social enterprise, Duncan Cotterill provides advisory services for a wide range of social enterprises in New Zealand - from individuals, to nationwide corporates. Without sacrificing the quality of our work, we take into account the limited resources most social enterprises are initially constrained by.
Connecting with social investors
Duncan Cotterill can help right from the very early stages of establishing a social enterprise. We also provide opportunities for ventures to attract investment from social investors and actively facilitate connections with our wider network of professional advisors.
Proactive and agile
Regardless of location, we can help and as a social enterprise grows, our support is scalable. We have offices in four unique markets: Auckland, Wellington, Nelson and Christchurch. We think as one firm, in four places - providing multi-office resources, such as virtual specialist teams.
Today’s start up social enterprise can become tomorrow’s success story! Here are examples of inspirational social enterprises combining profit with purpose.
Building a world that values diversity: Kilmarnock Enterprises
Kilmarnock Enterprises is a contract manufacturer and one of Christchurch’s leading social enterprises. Through professional training, meaningful employment, social development, health and wellbeing initiatives and ongoing support, people with disabilities are empowered to lead purposeful, dignified lives; they unlock their potential!
"Kilmarnock has enjoyed a long association with Duncan Cotterill. We have always found them to be professional, responsive and prepared to look at things from a quirky angle. As a social enterprise, our model has often required them to think outside of the box. Paul and Julia have been fantastic to deal with in every regard. We recently commissioned and built our new Basecamp and exited the site which had housed us for over 50 years. This complex situation had the potential to derail us, but through Duncan Cotterill’s patience, knowledge, and strong understanding of our needs, we have always felt in very safe and capable hands." Michelle Sharp, Chief Executive Officer.
Gifts that really do keep on giving: The Good Registry
Based at BizDojo in Wellington, The Good Registry simplifies giving, helps good causes and reduces waste. Event organisers register their event, choose a charity, then guests (and anyone else the event link is shared with) can donate to the charity, rather than buy gifts. After the event, The Good Registry ‘pays it forward’: passing on donations to the charity.
‘Our relationship with Duncan Cotterill has been invaluable to The Good Registry. As a new social enterprise, we face a unique set of challenges. Nick and Amy have taken the time to get to know us, to understand our challenges, and to help us navigate these challenges, to ensure that we can thrive as a social enterprise and have positive impact that we exist for. We know that their values align with ours, and we are grateful to have them on our team.’ Christine Langdon, Co-founder and Chief of Good.
Increasing food safety, reducing waste: Eagle Protect PBC
Eagle Protect in Christchurch, is the world's only B Corp* certified business supplying certified, food-safe disposable gloves and clothing. Quality gloves can be thinner yet stronger, which creates less waste. In 2017, by switching customers from vinyl gloves to Eagle Protect’s higher-quality ‘light & tough’ nitrile gloves, over 5,000 tonnes less waste was created.
"We have used Duncan Cotterill for our business needs for well over a decade. I have always found everyone to be incredibly responsive and helpful as well as professional. As co-founder of New Zealand's first B Corp Certified company and a business that believes in the power of the triple bottom line, it is rewarding to witness the continuing focus by Duncan Cotterill on social enterprise, entrepreneurship and creative business."
