National full-service law firm Duncan Cotterill is thrilled to announce the promotion of high performing Senior Associate Alastair Espie to its partnership.

Based in Auckland, Alastair strengthens the firm’s employment practice. Alastair is a specialist employment lawyer who has gained a reputation from clients as a commercially minded lawyer who takes the time to understand clients’ businesses. His expertise covers all aspects of employment law and he provides clients with both advisory and contentious support.

Alastair has developed a speciality practice advising employers on collective bargaining and industrial action, working closely with firm clients on the impacts of the recent Fair Pay Agreements Act. He works closely with employees and employers, including a number of New Zealand’s most significant private and public sector entities.

Duncan Cotterill Chair Richard Lang says the well-deserved promotion of Alastair recognises his commitment and contribution to the firm. “Alastair has quickly gained the trust of the firm as an experienced employment lawyer, who has been an asset to clients nationally when navigating complex workplace issues. His appointment to the partnership is an acknowledgement of his contributions to clients and the firm, and adds to the strength of our national employment offering,” Mr Lang says.

Alastair was listed as an ‘Associate to Watch’ by Chambers and Partners 2023 and was recognised as a recommended lawyer by the Legal 500 2023 legal directories for his employment law work. Alastair was also recognised by NZ Lawyer in 2021 as a “Rising Star”.

Alastair says: ”It is an honour to join the Duncan Cotterill partnership. I’m looking forward to continuing working with my great clients and colleagues.”

Alastair joins Auckland employment and health and safety Partners Jessie Lapthorne, Kirsty McDonald and Mark Lawlor, and brings the total number of Partners at Duncan Cotterill to 50.
