Duncan Cotterill has advised MainPower New Zealand Limited on the sale of development rights for the Mt Cass Wind Farm to Yinson Renewables.

The 94.6 MW project, Northern Canterbury’s first wind farm, is expected to generate more than 300 GWh of electricity each year by 2028, supplying around 40,000 homes. MainPower will continue to build and maintain local electricity infrastructure for network connection and will remain a landowner, hosting seven turbines on land that will be managed as a conservation area.

Duncan Cotterill provided legal support throughout the transaction, including negotiation, execution and completion.

The team advising MainPower was led by Corporate Partner Mark Cathro, with assistance from Construction and Infrastructure Partner Julia Flattery, Senior Associate Scott Walker and Solicitor Georgia Day.

“This project has been many years in the making and represents an important step forward for renewable energy,” said Mark Cathro, Partner at Duncan Cotterill. “Under the experienced ownership of Yinson Renewables, Mt Cass Wind Farm will progress and deliver lasting benefits for the region and New Zealand’s energy future.”

Yinson Renewables was advised by Greenwood Roche, led by Brigid McAthur and Kate Watt.

Duncan Cotterill supports New Zealand businesses on transactions across the energy, infrastructure and wider corporate sectors.
