Nick Crang

Partner

I specialise in public law, administrative law, competition and regulatory law, and energy law, and lead the nationwide public law practice.

My recent work includes advising on competition issues under Part 2 of the Commerce Act and in mergers, pricing for monopoly infrastructure services, telecommunication deals, mergers in the public sector, funding arrangements and other contracts in the public sector. I have advised on regulation in the broadcasting sector, and decisions under electricity and telecommunication laws. I work for government departments, Crown entities, regulators, and other organisations in the public sector, such as industry training organisations. In the private sector, I work for telecommunication, energy and broadcasting companies, airports and seaports. I also work for other companies and individuals who have to deal with the government or regulatory agencies.

Before joining Duncan Cotterill, I worked in the public law team of another national law firm, four years as a partner. Before that, I worked in the legal team at a large government department. As a result, I have a strong understanding of the public sector and the rules the sector operates under, which I put to use for your advantage.

I am a member of the Law Society's public and administrative law committee, the public law committee of the Wellington Branch of the Law Society and the committee of the Energy Law Association. I have been recognised in The Best Lawyers of New Zealand 2023 list for my Public Law work. I am also a regular contributor to the World Justice Project's Rule of Law Index, the most recent Index for 2022 has now been released.
