Scott Wilson

I am an employment law and health and safety specialist with in-depth knowledge of employment, health and safety and related compliance issues. Working closely with chief executives, legal counsel and HR managers, I provide strategic advice on all aspects of employment law, including disciplinary and performance matters, restraint of trade, protection of confidential information, holiday pay issues, restructuring, redundancies, health and safety, union matters and human rights issues.
As part of Duncan Cotterill’s leading Health & Safety team, I have extensive experience advising and advocating for clients on a full range of health and safety issues. I provide clients with expert advice on their health and safety obligations and regularly act on health and safety investigations and WorkSafe prosecutions. Clients have described me as "provid[ing] strong support". (Legal 500 Asia Pacific 2022)
I have extensive litigation experience in a range of jurisdictions and I am qualified as a solicitor in England and Wales, as well as New Zealand. I regularly attend mediations and appear in the District Court, Employment Relations Authority and Employment Court. I also have acted as Counsel in a number of Court of Appeal cases.
Recent experience includes:
- Representing a national employer in litigation to protect its confidential information, including obtaining ex-parte interim relief.
- Being a trusted employment adviser to several large agri-businesses and advising them on all aspects of employment law, including restraint of trade, collective bargaining and disciplinary matters.
- Representing tertiary institutions in relation to personal grievance claims brought against them.
I am listed as a recommended lawyer by the Legal 500 Asia Pacific 2023 legal directory; and I regularly write articles, present seminars and speak at conferences on employment and health and safety matters. I am also a board member of the Southern Cochlear Implant Programme, the treasurer of a local ski club, and the past convenor of the Employment Law Committee of the Canterbury Westland branch of the New Zealand Law Society.
