Rick Hargreaves

I practice in Duncan Cotterill’s litigation and dispute resolution team and undertake all areas of civil litigation. My main areas of practice include insurance law (in particular fire and general), earthquake litigation, civil fraud, commercial litigation, leaky homes and employment and independent contractor disputes.
I am an experienced advocate in both formal litigation and alternative dispute resolution. I have extensive experience in negotiation and mediation involving general civil, WHT, CEIT and employment relations matters. I have a comprehensive range of employment related skills gained through my employment with both unions and law firms. I have appeared in the Court of Appeal, High Court, Employment Court, District Court and CEIT. I have also attended many Employment Relations Authority investigation meetings.
Recent experience includes:
- Acting for insurers in multiple domestic and commercial earthquake matters.
- Acting for insurers in indemnity and liability claims including fire, vehicle, public liability, material damage and business interruption claims.
- Representing employers in employment relation disputes.
I have written a number of articles over the years for various publications and have also presented numerous in-house, client and external seminars.
I am a member of the New Zealand Law Society, Auckland District Law Society and the New Zealand Insurance Law Association.
