Michael leads our Technology practice and maintains a broad client base with a technical focus on technology, cyber security, data protection, privacy compliance, and intellectual property. His work often combines complex projects and contractual arrangements with regulatory compliance.

After more than 20 years practising law and leading teams in Australia and New Zealand, Michael feels privileged to be recognised as a market leader in technology law and intellectual property (IP).

However, Michael maintains a much more diverse practice that spans a broad range of industries and market sectors – including advertising and marketing, aged care, agriculture, automotive, banking and financial services, competition and antitrust, construction, e-commerce, education, energy, entertainment, fashion, FMCG, food and beverage, health, horticulture, insurance, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, publishing, retail, and technology.

His wide-ranging knowledge allows him to excel in advising clients on their complex and business critical projects, finding solutions to challenges that lay at the intersection between business, legal and commercial considerations.

Michael believes clients achieve greater outcomes from seeking truly specialised input at the beginning of any project.  He works collaboratively with other specialists within the firm to provide a cohesive, flexible and responsive service to clients so that they may navigate their particular challenges with confidence.

Recent highlights

  • Advising Northland Regional Council on their implementation of cloud-based enterprise software Infor, a significant digital project responding to changes in legislation that increased the council’s obligations around environmental work, information management, health and safety and data management.
  • Advising Mitre 10 New Zealand on their transformation programme to implement SAP across their business, including contract negotiations with SAP, its implementation partner and its third party POS provider.
  • Advising Kiwirail on all legal aspects of their Train Control System upgrade, to be delivered in phased by Alstom.
  • Advising GNS Science and the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) on all aspects of the development, delivery and support of RiskScape – an award-winning technology platform that provides spatial data processing for multi-hazard risk analysis.
  • Acting as breach counsel for a prominent IT managed services provider in relation to a significant trans-Tasman ransomware incident that impacted the client’s Australian and New Zealand subsidiaries as well as their customers.
  • Assisting with all legal matters to launch a business, including brand protection, privacy policies and compliance, App user terms, and development contracts.
  • Advising on all aspects of the creation of joint ventures for the benefit of technology products and services crucial to New Zealand’s economy.
  • Assisting with major transformation projects which involve brand strategy, intellectual property, privacy and data protection, commercial agreements, advertising and technology considerations.
