Parent Boost Visitor Visa
The Prime Minister and the Minister of Immigration jointly announced the news that many migrants in New Zealand have been waiting for – the planned introduction of the new Parent Boost Visitor Visa (PBVV).
Whilst the policy is yet to be released, our immigration team answers below some common questions.
What is the PBVV?
It is a multiple-entry visitor visa allowing parents of New Zealand citizens and residents to visit for up to five years. Applicants may then apply for a second visa, enabling a total stay of up to ten years.
When is the new PRVV due to come into effect?
29 September 2025.
What are the requirements to be granted a PBVV?
Applicants must demonstrate, amongst other things they:
- are of good character,
- meet the acceptable standard of health
- have an eligible sponsor
Do applicants have to undergo any health assessments?
Yes, they do. Applicants will be required to take two health assessments. The first is completed as part of their initial visa application. In the third year of the visa, applicants must then get a second health check. This must be done while the applicant is outside New Zealand. They will also need to show proof they have held valid health insurance while visiting New Zealand.
Are there any financial or other requirements?
Applicants must satisfy Immigration New Zealand (INZ) they have a sponsor earning at least the New Zealand median wage (or 1.5 times the median wage for joint sponsors). Alternatively, they can satisfy INZ that they either have:
- a personal income equivalent to New Zealand Superannuation, currently NZD32,611.28 per annum for a single parent, and NZD49,552.88 for a couple; or
- they have sufficient personal funds – NZD160,000 for a single applicant or NZD250,000 for a couple
Applicants must also hold at least one year of health insurance covering, amongst other things, emergency medical care, repatriation, or cancer treatment. They must also hold valid health insurance for the entire duration of their stay in New Zealand.
What requirements does a sponsor have to meet?
A sponsor has several requirements they must meet. They include demonstrating they are:
- The applicant’s biological or adopted child
- A New Zealand citizen or resident
In addition, a sponsor must also agree to take on specific responsibilities including:
- Covering essential costs such as accommodation and daily living costs
- Ensuring access to health and financial support
- Covering costs related to the repatriation or deportation of their parent(s), if required
Once the immigration instructions governing the PBVV are released specific details will then be known. We will also continue to monitor any announcements and provide updates.
